6 Great Educational Websites With Blank Maps for Teachers

Maps are especially valuable for a number of subjects, including geography, history and science. Teachers often need either printable world and country maps, or blank maps they can use to identify important locations, or that they can use to test student understanding of world geography.

There are plenty of websites that offer a variety of maps for teachers in exchange for a paid membership or for single purchase, but finding free blank maps for teachers usually proves rather difficult. The following are six of the best resources where you'll find both labeled and blank maps for use inside and outside the classroom.

50 States

50 States is focused primarily on the U.S., so it is an ideal resource for educators that need maps for U.S. Geography or U.S. History. From the main menu, you can choose from any one of the States on a graphical menu.

Each of the state pages features a full state outline map that is entirely blank, except for markers that identify the locations of the Capitol city and other major cities in the state.

National Geographic Map Maker

National Geographic offers one of the best online tools to create blank maps for teachers. This online tool lets you build customized maps of any location in the world that has as much or as little information on the map as you like.

From the main world map page, you can select a region and country of the world that you want to focus on. Next, just add map elements, borders and names and any other features that you want displayed on the map. Once you're finished, you can download, email or print the map. This is an invaluable tool for educators.

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Education Place

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt is an educational company, so it is little surprise that it would offer another great resource for blank maps at its educational website called "Education Place".

The nice thing about most of the map collection at this site is that you can choose from either fully labeled maps, or blank maps. Whichever map you choose, you'll have a full-page PDF version of the map that you can download and save, or just print out and use right in your classroom.

About.com Geography

About.com is well-known as an informational website. However, it is also well-known for being more filled with links than with actual, meaningful information. However, when it comes to blank maps, About.com does meet the need with an entire collection of simple, label-free outline maps that you can quickly save or print out. From the main Geography index, you'll find a very long list of world locations to choose from.

About.com offers blank outline maps that are about as simple as you can ask for - they are just outline images with no information on them. If that is what you need, then this is the site for you.

D-Maps.com

Of all online resources for blank maps, D-Maps is easily one of the most valuable and the most extensive. The site is also much better designed than other educational websites.

From the main page, you'll find categories that include world and oceans, asia, europe, oceania and even historical maps. The site boasts an impressive collection of over 18,000 maps - and the collection continues to grow.

TeacherVision

TeacherVision is one of those educational websites that isn't entirely free, but it does offer a select collection of free resources for educators. If you don't mind sifting through paid resources to get to the free stuff, then this is worth your while.

In the "Maps and Globes" section of the Geography area, you'll find maps that are suitable for ages Pre-K up through the 12th grade. Once you find the map that you want, you'll see a green "View Printable" button. This will open up a PDF view of the map that you can download or print as needed.

As the Internet tends to gravitate more toward paid resources and tools, it's nice to find a valuable collection of resources that teachers can use in the classroom. Blank maps are important and valuable for a wide range of subjects, so all of the above websites should become important bookmarks for educators at all grade levels.
