eLibrary - Keep a Virtual eBook Library in the Classroom

By using the open-source eBook virtual library called eLibrary, you can catalog all of your books so that your students can easily find something interesting to read. eLibrary is a bit unique because it gives you the option to not only collection and organize e-books, but also any regular books that you might have as part of your library.

One of the best things that a teacher can do for students in a classroom is to provide reading material. It doesn't matter if it's Science, Social Studies or English; there is an important place in every curriculum for reading.

The traditional method of offering reading material in the classroom has always been to stock a shelf up with lots of books. That is still the preferred method for many educators, but with the popularity of computers in the classroom, a brand new medium is now available to offer students a much larger selection of books than ever before. That medium is e-books.

In the classroom, e-books provide teachers with a perfect opportunity to provide a very large collection of reading material in very little space - the space the size of a computer to be exact. By using the open-source eBook virtual library called eLibrary, you can catalog all of your books so that your students can easily find something interesting to read.

eLibrary is a bit unique because it gives you the option to not only collection and organize e-books, but also any regular books that you might have as part of your library.

E-book Library Main Screen

The main screen of eLibrary is a set of folders that will help you to organize all of your e-books into whatever genre you feel is appropriate. It comes preloaded with folders like Science, Computers, Study and more.

You can change the ones that are already there by right-clicking and choosing "Rename".

You could also break them down into sub-categories by choosing to "Add Child Tag" and breaking down that subject further. In eLibrary, folders are called "Tags" because they are words used to describe the subjects of your books.

When you're ready to start building your virtual library of books, all you have to do is click on the "Book" menu and then choose "Add New Book".

Adding New Books

When you add a new book, the process gives you the capability of adding either a real book that you might have in your classroom, or an e-book. Why would you want to add a real book? Because it gives students the ability to look up the titles without having to physically try to search for that book.

As a matter of fact, if you create an alphabetical filing system on your classroom shelves, all students have to do once they find a book they like in the virtual library, is to walk over to your book shelves and find the book by the first word of the title.

However, eLibrary really specializes in organizing e-books, so if you want to add e-books that you've purchased or downloaded from the web, just click on the "Add File" button and browse to wherever you stored the e-book file.

Adding E-Book Files

E-Library can import PDF files, CHM files and much more.

If you decide to add one of your physical books, you can just fill out the fields for Title, Authors, Publisher, Publish Date and finally the Description. Make sure to fill out a thorough description of the book, because this will be what your students use to judge whether or not they want to read the book!

Filling out Book Information

Once you're finished - whether you chose to archive an e-book or a real book, your last step is to categorize your book by checking off accurate "tags" where the book belongs in your virtual library.

Organize Your Books With Tags

Another very cool feature of eLibrary is that it has the ability to regularly monitor a certain folder in your computer. Whenever new e-book files are loaded into that folder, the software will automatically recognize that there are new e-books to be filed away, and next time you open the software it'll prompt you.

Directory Monitoring

Another very cool feature of eLibrary is that it has the ability to regularly monitor a certain folder in your computer. Whenever new e-book files are loaded into that folder, the software will automatically recognize that there are new e-books to be filed away, and next time you open the software it'll prompt you.

What makes this especially useful is the fact that whenever you download or purchase a new e-book off the Internet, you don't have to add those e-books and fill out all of the information for them right away. Instead, just place them in the special eLibrary folder, and then later when you have more time, you can launch the software and get to work organizing your books!

Search by Tags, Authors or Publishers

Another nice feature is that students don't only have to search by tag, they can also search through your book collection by author or publisher. By clicking on the Author or Publisher area of the navigation menu, the navigation menu changes so that students can click on a particular author or publisher, and see all of the associated books in your collection.

As you can see, having software like this can encourage your students to read more, because it's so easy for them to browse through your entire collection, and choose new books to read. And, when you're a teacher, getting kids to read more is one of the greatest accomplishments you can have.
