Atlas of World History - Map Animation
This free map animation software is an interesting way to visualize history! Animated maps show empires growing and countries changing in Europe, Africa, and Asia over 4000 years (from 3000 BC up to to 1000 AD).

You can stop the animation at any time by clicking on a civilization name, and details about this civilization's history will be displayed.
The graphics are a bit crude, the user interface is a bit tricky and non-standard and the software always run in a resolution of 800 X 600 pixels (full screen mode). Still, it is free and worth having a look at.
